Hey everyone, we’re approaching our one-year anniversary, and our new CD “Exodus By Clouds” is coming out. Looking back, the past year has been pretty eventful with Life(Stream). I would like to share my side of the story, leading up to the first gig with Life(Stream). Check out Remy's Note on the Life(Stream) page as well!

When I came back to NWSS for my last year, I initially had no plans of joining a band. In fact, I had quit most of my extra-curricular activities from grade 11, in order to concentrate more on studying. I quit my last band, Polaris, quit my soccer team, and everything else to devote myself to studying. Throughout high school, I was in a few metal bands, including one with Wes, our drummer, in Polaris. However, coming into grade 12, I put all those things behind me, thinking I was going to focus solely on academics.

Luckily that’s not how it turned out…
</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.lifestreamtheband.com/blog/2009/8/4/retrospective-pre-wes-sept-nov-2007-remy.html"><rss:title>Retrospective: "Pre-Wes" Sept-Nov 2007 (Remy)</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.lifestreamtheband.com/blog/2009/8/4/retrospective-pre-wes-sept-nov-2007-remy.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Retrospectives</dc:subject>
In celebration of our up coming EP, I'm planning to continue my "Retrospective" series. -----------------------

I came back for my last year at NWSS with one thought in mind, "I want to make a band." It was an impulse of mine, something I just really wanted to do. I had spent all summer listening to stuff like Arcade Fire, Death Cab, Patrick Wolf, etc. Basically, I was becoming aware of this strange "indie" genre. Before that, I had no idea that there was some good music coming out of anywhere. My view on the industry was grim, and catching the odd music video on MTV with rappers flashing twelve dollars worth of cash while near naked women cleaned their various body parts on vintage cars--let's just say I didn't have a very high opinion. This discovery of music that I actually liked being released in present time was quite a shock in the system. Before that, I was exclusively listening to instrumental tracks from films, video games, and Pink Floyd.

So, liking the music, I naturally wanted to learn to play it on the piano. Now here's a few things that most people don't know, but Ben Gibbard (Death Cab) was actually a pretty big influence. Not so much musically, but because the first songs I picked up to play were "Transatlanticism" and "Such Great Heights" (I'm sure a few people have seen me play this). I had also been composing a lot on garageband and working things out on the piano for a good two-three years, so when these things clashed, a light bulb went off in my head.
</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.lifestreamtheband.com/blog/2009/8/3/join-our-mailing-list.html"><rss:title>Join Our Mailing List!</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.lifestreamtheband.com/blog/2009/8/3/join-our-mailing-list.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Sign up for our mailing list and you'll get a slew of extra goodies and notifications when we release new songs!
Free music for the promise of more free music? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

At this point, we're thinking, "Hey? We're an independent band, we've really got nothing to lose--why don't we really embrace the web. I'm talking about basing our entire operation out of this little site, twitter, and bandcamp. I'm talking about free music for everyone. Free music in EVERY. SINGLE. FORMAT.

Ingredients:

Squarespace + Bandcamp + Twitter + Vimeo

So here's what we're trying to accomplish:

1) Increase interactivity! We want to talk to you! We want to make friends with you!

2) Share music! We want you to listen and enjoy our music. We want to share it with you, and we hope that you can share it with your friends. AND YES! Please, go ahead and torrent it! But I think we're providing you with a better option with Bandcamp. Just go and click on music and you'll know what I mean.

3) We want to use the tools of the web to our full advantage.

4) We want to build a mailing list. I think this is the most important to us. We want a way to reach out to you. So please, sign up by downloading a song!

This is just a big experiment at the moment. So--here we go!
